I’m exhibiting with SCBWI at ALA, Booth #1626 in Chicago on July 11, 2009, from 9am-11am.  I hope to see you there!

After the conference, look for my article all about it in the Fall issue of the Prairie Wind. http://www.intelligentlight.com/PrairieWind/

I am also busy with four new projects.  The first is a middle grade novel about about friendship and grief and loss.  The second book is a collaborative non-fiction work about sibling loss, written with the fabulous Lynn Price.  And the last manuscript is a picture book about bird eggs.  These are all ridiculously different in content and genre but I hope they all lend something to their respective readers.

Last, I am working on a project about the artist Judy Chicago and her committment to women's history.  This is an effort I am particularly honored to be entrusted with!

Sam's Sister is a work of beauty. The author and the illustrator have done an impeccable job of representing the emotional aspects of open adoption from a child's perspective.
-Julie Jarrel Baily, Author of The Adoption Reunion Survival Guide

Thank you for publishing Sam's Sister.  Recently, I was working with a young woman with children. They were quite angry at their mother for considering an adoption plan for her unborn child, their half sibling. Using Sam's Sister they were able to recognize the feelings of their mother and instead of being angry at her, they were all able to grieve together. The older children ages 8 and 11 now trade taking the book to their classrooms where their teachers have read the book to the class. It has helped their peers respect and better understand adoption and show compassion to the family. Now the children are talking openly with their mother and no longer see her as not caring about the child she's caring.

On 9/29/07, The 2007, Banned Books Event took place in downtown Chicago.  I was overjoyed to be in the presence of (and have a picture taken with) Chris Crutcher!  Here I am pictured with Md. Critcher and the wonderful Carolyn Mackler, both of whom are talented and prolific writers for middle grade and young adult readers.  Chris and Carolyn focus their materials on some of the more difficult issues kids face and are beacons of bravery in an effort to bring materials to children that they can connect to, and find comfort in.
